  • Gave an invited talk at NRAO ("How National Observatories Can Contribute to K-12 Education: Using the WWW as a Tool")
  • submitted for an invited publication: a contribution of definitions for the CRC Dictionary of Physics and Astronomy — with referees and editors still adjusting text
  • Awarded the NSF POWRE Grant ($75,000) for research and teaching.
  • Gave a Brown Bag talk at VSU: "Buckyballs in Space"
  • Submitted a Hubble Space Telescope proposal with collaborators to observe the carbon star, V Hya
  • Invited observer for the Leonid Meteor Shower Training Session (University of Western Ontario) (with Martha Leake). Travel and expenses paid by UWO consortium grant from NASA.
  • Invited observer for Leonid Meteor Shower November 1999 at the Florida Keys. (with Martha Leake). Travel and expenses paid by UWO consortium grant from NASA.
  • Received $29,000 from ETACT
  • Observed at Lick Observatory, 3 m telescope, for my carbon star research
  • NSF Panel Member for Stellar Parameters 1999

    • submitted for an invited publication: authored a section of the 4th Edition of Allen's Astrophysical Quantities
    • submitted for an invited publication: authored an entry on the Hubble Space Telescope for the next edition of Worldbook Encyclopedia
    • received a $800 faculty research grant from VSU
    • Observed at Lick Observatory, 3 m telescope, for my carbon star research
  • Grants and Proposals at VSU

Recent projects include: 1) results of my HST observing time, 2) results of my Lick Observatory time, 3) ongoing testing of the adaptive filter for radio astronomy, and 4) abundance analysis of s-process elements of carbon stars. In addition, I have been invited to collaborate with a group from the University of Vienna, Austria, and will be going to Vienna over the winter break to give an invited colloquium and to set up the details of a collaboration. I have also submitted two large NASA proposals as a Co-I. If we are funded, all of my research efforts will be geared toward those satellite projects (SIRTIF and SIM satellites).

A collaborator and I are in the process of submitting a proposal to observe at Keck Observatory to continue the project started at Lick Observatory last year. As part of my NSF grant, I intend to give a talk at an upcoming AAS meeting describing the building of the 3 meter radio telescope on the roof of Nevins Hall. Also, my students will be presenting their work on this project at the CUR.
