| Just before the end of its life, while it's fusing silicon into iron, the core of a massive star looks like the inside of an onion, with left-over remnants of its earlier fusion reactions in shells around the core. A massive star can build elements up to iron, but iron is the heaviest element fusion can make which puts out enough energy to resist the relentless squeeze of gravity. | |||||||||
